An online communication strategy is crucial

In the online jungle, those savvy enough to make the most of the offerings are sure to walk away as kings.

In the sophisticated business world in which we operate, having a website is no longer enough, says Phillippa Fox, marketing and administrative executive of the Railways and Harbours Supply Chain Association.

“Online communication is not just about having a website, but rather an integrated presence and most companies should be investing in an online communication strategy.”

Fox says many still shrug off this way of communication as they believe they are not delivering a service or a product to the ordinary citizen. “Every business, regardless what type, should be communicating online and looking at the various options of marketing their businesses via the internet.”

She says because many don’t realise the importance of this type of communication websites are often not updated, with the information stale and uninformative.

“Ask yourself the questions – where is my business in the online wilderness? If someone were to search for your business would they need to know your name or would a search engine lead them to you? Essentially it is about where you stand in terms of search engine optimisation, ad sense, banners, Twitter accounts, Facebook or Slideshare to share presentations.”

Fox says these are just a few ways to connect with customers. “Online newsletters are gaining popularity while Skype has made a huge difference, along with instant messaging.”

She says it is no longer business as usual as traditional marketing methods have changed. “Getting yourself out there using technology is no longer just another option, but rather a must have.”

As the Railways and Harbours Conference and Exhibition 2009 launched the nature of its website evolved.
Over night the website changed. It changed its direction, it changed in its purpose and it changed its layout.

Reasons for this being, that the organisers needed to originaly promote the event. Once event kicked off it was to provide live reporting, a single point of enty for the media, exhibitors and delegates.

Enter a blog. Moreso, enter a wordpress powered blog. This enabled the client to post images of the conference shortly after each presentation. It has allowed them to add the presentations via embedding them from slideshare. And whats more, a delegate can comment on each presentation.

The exhibitors also are not forgotten, in that video interviews were done and embedded via You Tube into each exhibitors profile page. Photo’s and press releases also add to the dynamic content of this virtual form of promotion.

With any event there is a mad rush close to the end. Being seasoned veterans in this regard, (the event and not the mad rush) its all about crossing the “T’s” and joing the railway tracks here at Presslink.
Between the 4 – 6 March 2009 the port and rail industries will launch their very own exhibition and conference. Yes, the Railways and Harbours Conference and Exhibition is taking place in Cape Town, created by its very own members. The industry themselves. A collaborative effort by all to debate and engage with each other as they tackle the transport infrastructure issues that need resolving on our African Continent.
So rolling out their marketing and advertising Ive spent the morning harnessing online social media platforms and using the vast network out there to push the event further. In doing so we are embracing technology to push content further and provide greater value for the railway and maritime organisations that are exhibiting at the show. With the current economic “balls-up” the internet is a sure way to allow those on restrictive travel budgets to participate and visit the show without being left in the dark.
